Our Retirement Program
Horse Retirement Program
The primary focus at Chester Bar Farm is the well-being of every retired horse.
Upon arrival, each horse is thoughtfully and gradually introduced to the retired herd. Horses begin their transition in a stable with a companion, allowing them time to bond and adjust. They are initially turned out in smaller pastures before eventually joining the larger herd, which soon becomes their new family.
Our pastures are filled with quiet stories—the formation of lifelong friendships and, occasionally, love at first sight. Our philosophy is simple: let a horse be a horse, free to enjoy the peace, movement, and companionship that are innate to their spirit.
Feed and Care
Horses at Chester Bar Farm graze exclusively on our rich, healthy pasture grasses. The results speak for themselves—strong, dappled, and shiny horses.
During the winter months, horses are fed premium-quality Idaho alfalfa. As horses age and require additional nutrition, we have had excellent success supplementing with Purina Senior Formula.
A master farrier provides all routine trimming, and highly respected veterinarians are available 24/7 for emergencies. Horses are trimmed every six weeks, wormed every three months, and receive annual dental care. Chester Bar staff work closely with our equine veterinarians to administer medications as prescribed.
Farm Manager Roger Maines and Assistant Manager Robin Greene personally check each horse multiple times daily, maintaining a hands-on approach and developing a bond with every individual horse.
Horse Retirement Pricing
The monthly fee for horse retirement at Chester Bar Farm is $750 per horse. This includes feeding, routine trimming, worming, dental care, and multiple daily hands-on inspections.
